Google AI Overviews: how to show up in the answer

Google increasingly shows a written answer at the top of the results. Here’s what we know, what we don’t and what helps you get cited in it.

When you search for something on Google, a box with a written answer sometimes appears at the very top, above the links. These are AI Overviews. For a business, being cited in that box, or having its site linked there, can make a real difference. Here’s what we can honestly say about it.

What we know

  • AI Overviews summarize an answer drawn from several web pages and show links to some of them.
  • They don’t appear for every search, and what’s shown varies with the question, the region, the language and the timing.
  • To be cited, a page first has to be findable and readable by Google.

What we don’t know

Google doesn’t publish an exact recipe for being chosen in an AI Overview. Anyone who claims to know “the trick” is selling you hot air. What we can do is apply solid fundamentals that help customers and machines alike.

The fundamentals that help

1. Content that answers the question directly

Start with the answer, in a sentence or two, then expand. A heading phrased as a question (“How much does it cost...”) followed by a short answer makes reading easier for humans and machines alike.

2. A page Google can read cleanly

Your page must be accessible, fast, readable on a phone and not blocked to crawlers. An overly strict robots.txt file, a page hidden behind a form, or content that loads only after an action can prevent it from being read.

3. Accurate structured data

Structured data describes your business, your services and your frequently asked questions in a format machines understand. It should reflect what’s written on the page, without exaggeration.

4. Consistent information everywhere

Your Google Business Profile, your site and the directories must all say the same thing: name, address, phone number, hours, services.

5. Real proof

Authentic reviews, mentions from independent sources, concrete examples of your work. These are trust signals you never have to invent.

AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity: the same game?

Not quite. Each tool has its own sources and logic, and they change regularly. But the foundations are very similar: clarity, consistency and reliable sources. That’s why we work on those fundamentals first, then measure what each assistant answers.

What you can do this week

  1. Search your customers’ main questions on Google and note whether an AI Overview appears.
  2. See whether your business or your competitors are cited there.
  3. Check that your business profile, your site and your directories match.
  4. Add a page of clear frequently asked questions.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do you appear in Google’s AI Overviews?

There’s no official recipe. What helps: content that answers the question directly, an accessible and fast page, accurate structured data, consistent information everywhere and real proof of trust.

Do Google’s AI Overviews replace traditional SEO?

No. They sit alongside the traditional results and don’t appear for every search. Good groundwork serves both SEO and visibility in AI Overviews.

Can you guarantee being cited in an AI Overview?

No. Google chooses the sources itself, and what’s shown varies with the question, the region and the timing. You can improve your chances, but not guarantee them.
